America’s Pastime Thrives in Goodyear
Each year, Goodyear comes alive with the sights and sounds of baseball, as Major League teams return for spring training at local stadiums. The history of bats and balls in our city reflects the transformation of Goodyear, as well as the deep connection between the community and the game.
Goodyear’s spring training story begins as recently as 2009, before which, the Phoenix area was well-known for hosting preseason games. However, when the Cincinnati Reds and the Cleveland Indians (now the Guardians) chose Goodyear for their spring training home base, everything changed. The teams were, of course, attracted to the city’s mild climate during the early months of the year and its proximity to Phoenix. Its growth in infrastructure and thriving community have also been sought-after traits in a spring training destination.

Building the Future
To prepare for the new teams’ arrival, the Goodyear Ballpark was constructed and opened in 2009. Designed to benefit both players and fans, it offered amenities for all ages and a charming classic ballpark atmosphere. Spectators love the immersive experience of being part of the game up close in an exciting environment that celebrates America’s Pastime in charming and memorable ways. It has been named by USA Today’s 10 BEST reader’s choice as the best place to watch a spring training game in Arizona.
Hosting two teams has created a rare atmosphere that fosters genuine camaraderie and friendly competition. It offers the fans a wider range of players and baseball styles, and creates a sense of good-natured rivalry that brings positive, playful energy to the stands. Each team has a year-round presence here, through spring training, extended spring training, Arizona (rookie) League, Fall Instructional League and the rehabilitation of injured players.
Good For All
Becoming a hub for spring training has brought many economic benefits to Goodyear as well. Each year, local restaurants and hotels, sports stores and retail shops are flooded with business from fans from all over the country. Jobs are created and tourism is boosted through the millions of dollars that are brought in every spring.
Love From the Locals
Perhaps the most delightful effect is the deep connection that has been fostered between the city and the sport. As the spring season commences, many local residents gather to celebrate a pastime that has helped to put Goodyear on the map. Through clinics, community outreach programs and charity events, the Reds and Guardians have created strong bonds with all ages, fostering a warm personal atmosphere between players and fans.
Goodyear is committed to creating a thriving atmosphere for baseball fans for years to come. With continual investments in Goodyear Ballpark and other events, our city has secured its status as a much loved spring training destination.
